I went to the model railway exhibition here. Large building, great exhibition, just a pity that the bus stop is a bit of a walk.

This is a church building. Not religious and didn’t burst into flames. Nicely designed use of glass and steel. Great facilities and lighting

Why Having A Purpose Is Vital For Creating A Successful Event

Explore intentionality in events and discover why using an overarching reason for the event to guide decision-making will make a big impact on its success.

Intentionality is a hot topic right now. More than a buzzword, it is deliberate and conscious decisions designed to progress toward a goal. In the events and conference industry, intentionality is a key trend for 2026.

Organising an event, whether it is a yearly conference, an away day or other corporate event, should always have an objective. An objective might revolve around attendee numbers, brand awareness or leads for sales; all valid business objectives.

When organising events, so many decisions must be made: the dates, corporate event venue, catering, talk topics, breakout activities, invitations or ticketing. Understandably, many are made out of habit, budget, or because that is what worked before.

Intentionality asks something more; it asks that every aspect of the event serves an overarching purpose.

To do that, organisers need to tap into the deeper purpose of the event; once the big-picture underlying ‘why’ is uncovered, it informs all the subsequent decisions in event curation.

Before you begin to organise your next away day, conference or other corporate event, it is worth considering the reason behind the event, so that every detail is intentional.

Why does purpose matter in events and conferencing?

When an event has a purpose, and every aspect is designed around it, it will have a direct impact on the people who attend and participate in the event. There are several benefits to building intentionality and purpose into an event by actively curating it.

  • Increased engagement and less passive audiences
  • A more memorable, and hopefully inspiring, experience as it is not a generic event
  • Reduced time and expense on unnecessary resources and activities
  • Networking is more meaningful
  • Action from attendees after the event with practical takeaways
  • More positive feedback and reputation enhancement for your organisation

How to identify the ‘why’ of your event?

Author and thought leader Simon Sinek delivered a TED Talk in 2009 that changed how many businesses approach their product and service design. His core concept was that the most successful organisations built everything around their ‘why’.

The ‘why’ is the reason they exist; rather than simply selling a product, it is their purpose. The idea can be applied to conferences and events, driving the design of the day and creating a more impactful and engaging event for participants and attendees.

Here are a few questions that may help you find the why of your event:

  • What is the big question or problem you are hoping to answer?
  • What is the unique selling point or differentiating feature?
  • If the event was a verb, what would it be?
  • What are the core values that drive your organisation and the event?
  • What are the benefits for attendees?
  • What would you like attendees to say about the event to their colleagues and friends?
  • How do you want to define success beyond attendee metrics and financial KPIs?

Once you have answers to these questions, you will be on your way to an event that will feel intentional and purpose-driven.

The ‘why’ will form the foundation for all the planning decisions involved in creating, promoting and hosting a successful event. It will inform the choice of event venue, schedule structure, speakers, workshops and more, to make it a memorable and useful experience.
